“I said, ‘Look, why don’t we start from the beginning? If we had no external pressures, what would be the most straightforward way to apply to Bard, or to college in general?’ ” he recalled later. By the time it was over, Botstein had decided to radically expand the ways in which prospective students could apply to Bard. Was it working? Were they attracting the sorts of students they wanted?
